What is it? An orthotic is a device that goes in your shoe to control abnormal foot and leg motion without limiting normal motion. Unlike a one size fits all foot-bed or an insole that you would find “off the shelf”, a custom orthotic is molded specifically to your foot using careful measurements to capture your foot’s unique shape.

The Right Support: A good custom orthotic actually changes the position of your foot in a very specific way to assure that your foot will function in its neutral position. It must carefully conform to the unique contours of your foot and be sufficiently supportive to maintain those contours under the weight of your feet.

Get an Evaluation First: To determine if you need orthotics, it is best to see us for an evaluation. We will explain to you why you will benefit from a custom orthotic and give you strength and flexibility exercises to make sure the orthotic gives you the greatest possible benefit. If you don’t need a custom orthotics solution, we have other ways of addressing your problems through exercise, education, and proper shoes. Breathing well is fundamental to good health, well being and optimal performance. Yet, you may not think much about how you breathe.

Poor breathing, or Dysfunctional Breathing, can affect many aspects of your life: stress levels, mood, pain, athletic performance, and cognitive function. One in ten people may experience short term or long term Dysfunctional Breathing, and for those with respiratory conditions such as asthma or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), it is more common.

Do you experience any of the following symptoms?

  • Breathlessness (shortness of breath)
  • Anxiety
  • Decreased tolerance to exercise
  • Tingling or altered sensatino of hands or feet
  • Decreased pain tolerance
  • Ongoing neck or low back pain
  • Chest pain or tightness, heart palpitations
  • Poor management of asthma or COPD symptoms

What can physiotherapy do to help?

After a thorough initial assessment by a specially trained physical therapist, we will identify any connections between poor breathing and your symptoms.

We will help you retrain your breathing patterns at rest which often helps manage anxiety, enhance recovery and promote sleep. Pattern retraining is also practiced with movement and activity to optimize function for daily activities, work and sports. If needed, exercises may be prescribed to reduce carbon dioxide sensitivity or increase strength of the diaphragm and other inspiration muscles using specialized home equipment.

Where appropriate, traditional physiotherapy techniques may be included since poor posture, stiff joints and muscles or other weakness may be contributing factors.
