Who Can We Help

  • Age Requirement: Patients must be 17 years or older.
  • Residency: We do not accept out-of-province referrals.
  • Referral Sources: Referrals must be made by a physician, nurse practitioner, or physiotherapist.

 

Conditions Not Seen: We do not accept referrals for isolated back pain.  If there is a suspected recent stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), please direct referrals to one of the stroke prevention clinics at GNH, RAH, or UAH.

  • Headaches & Migraines: Chronic migraine, trigeminal neuralgia
  • Movement Disorders: Tremor, Parkinson’s disease, abnormal movements
  • Seizure Disorders
  • Spinal Conditions: Myelopathy, radiculopathy
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Initial diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis
  • Balance Issues: Dizziness, vertigo, ataxia
  • Cognitive Impairment: Memory loss, possible dementia (requires collateral history and recent cognitive tests)
  • Post-Concussion Syndrome
  • Focal or Progressive Weakness
  • Numbness, Tingling, or Paresthesia
  • Abnormal CT Head or MRI Brain Findings

Botox for Chronic Migraine Clinic

Botox injection therapy is an effective treatment for chronic migraine, requiring maintenance every three months. Our clinic provides timely Botox treatments, helping patients manage migraines effectively while allowing neurologists to focus on new consultations and other treatment plans.

  • Over 10 years of experience in Botox therapy for chronic migraine.
  • Clinicians trained in PREEMPT Trial 2 protocols and “chase the pain” techniques.
  • Collaboration with the University of Alberta Headache Clinic and community neurologists.
  • Botox Dose: 200 units
  • Injection Sites: 31 standard injection points, with additional targeted injections as needed.
  • Frequency: Every 12 weeks (3 months)
  • Headache: 5%
  • Eyelid Droop (Ptosis): 4%
  • Neck Pain: 9%
  • Injection Site Pain: 3%
  • Insurance Coverage: Botox treatment for chronic migraine is covered under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) for patients aged 18-64.
  • Eligibility Requirements:
    • At least 15 headache days per month, with each lasting 4 hours or longer.
    • Must have tried and found at least 2-3 oral preventative medications ineffective or intolerable.
    • Repeat treatments eligible every 12 weeks.
  • Fee: $100 per Botox treatment if the patient:
    • Is younger than 18 or older than 65.
    • Requests treatment earlier than the 12-week interval.
  • Botox Medication: 200 units typically costs $800-$850 every 3 months.
  • Insurance Reimbursement: Most private insurance providers require a “Prior authorization form” completed by a physician. Approval usually takes 1-2 weeks and may need annual renewals.
