Dr Mariam Ashraf grew up in Edmonton and always had an interest in health care. She graduated from the University of Alberta in 2002 with a B.Sc. (specializing in Psychology) and then continued on to chiropractic school in Toronto.
Since graduating as a doctor of chiropractic in 2006, Dr Ashraf has earned certifications in Active Release Technique (full-body certified in A.R.T.) and Kinesiotaping for soft tissue injuries. She has had volunteer experience performing first aid and training with several sports teams (eg. the Toronto Lynx and the Fort Saskatchewan Chiefs). Dr Ashraf also loves working with children- treating all ages in the clinic and going to schools (Bon Accord, Tanzania) to teach elementary school students about posture and proper backpack ergonomics.
Dr Ashraf particularly has a special interest in treating TMJD (jaw problems) with several specific training courses, including attending the AAOP (American Academy of Orofacial Pain) conference in 2013, completing the Somatic Senses functional treatment course (course for chiropractors to assess and treat the jaw), attending monthly meetings with the jaw pain MASCCP study club, and applying dental, physiotherapy, and chiropractic treatments for a well-rounded approach to assessing and treating jaw disorders.
Dr Ashraf is also trained to perform gait and biomechanical assessments for custom orthotics.
For future endeavors, Dr Ashraf plans to expand her knowledge of assessing and treating vertigo. She currently treats BPPV (benign vertigo) regularly but will add to her skill set by completing a vestibular rehab course in Vancouver this November.
